South Australia » Fleurieu Peninsula

The coast south of Adelaide leading into a large peninsula is called the Fleurieu Peninsula. It makes an ideal day trip and has splendid beaches for swimming and surfing. Victor Harbour is the main town on the Fleurieu Peninsula, looking out onto Encounter Bay. Farmland and Conservation areas are inland along with McLaren Vale, home to many vineyards. In addition, there are a number of small historic towns, including Port Elliott, Goolwa, and Willunga.

The eastern coast of the peninsula is called Gulf St Vincent, and hosts some fabulous swimming beaches. The best beaches are to the north including Christies Beach, Maslin Beach, Moana, Port Noarlunga and Seaford and make up part of Onkaparinga. Further south from Aldinga Beach the coastline gets a bit rocky, although both Carrickalinga and Normanville are good beaches towards the southern point of the peninsula.

Although many cynics believe it is just rising damp, other residents of Yankalilla just south of Normanville believe that the image of Jesus and Virgin Mary has appeared on the wall of the Anglican Church, see for yourself. At the point of the peninsula is Cape Jervis, where you can catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island. It is also the start of the Heysen Trail which heads all the way up through the Fleurieu Peninsula, heading through the dairy area of the Inman Valley and many national parks along the way. There are also several other walking trails at Cape Jervis situated within the Deep Creek Conservation Park.

Heading along the eastern side of the peninsula you will come across Goolwa, Port Elliot and Victor Harbour. Port Elliot is a seaport on Horeshoe Bay, which makes up a part of Encounter Bay. Horseshoe Bay offers a great swimming beach, although if you are looking at going surfing head to Boomer Beach or Middleton Beach.

McLaren Vale
The McLaren Vale is most famous for its delicious wines, although there are also some pretty historic towns worth visiting, if visiting this area.

Although the major produce in the McLaren Vale used to be its superb red wines, since the 1970’s white wine has began to make an appearance. The main wineries can be found in Langhorne, Reynella (home to the first winery in 1838) and Willunga. Willunga is also famous for its almonds, holding the Almond Blossom Festival every July. There are about 45 wineries that you can visit in the area, either on your own by car or along the pretty cycle track or with a tour.

If you are in the area during one of its festivals you should definitely go if you enjoy good food and good wine. The Sea and Vines Festival is held in June, and in October is both the Continuous Picnic and McLaren Vale Wine Bushing Festival.

There are some fantastic walks in the area around the Mt. Magnificent Conservation Park, as well as around Morphett Vale, Old Noarlunga, Port Noarlunga and Reynella. Morphett Vale hosts some fabulous historic buildings, including the first Roman Catholic Church in South Australia.

There are several beautiful accommodation places around the area, including some delightful bed and breakfasts. McLaren Vale can be reached by the Premier Stateliner service to Victor Harbor. If you love wine and beautiful countryside then you will love the McLaren Vale.

Onkaparinga
South from Adelaide the coastline changes into cliffs that overlook the sandy beaches. You'll find Chrisites great for swimming and fishing, with plenty of room to play games. If you enjoy surfing then try catching a wave at Moana, or if you prefer a nudist beach then visit Maslins.

Further again along the coast you'll come across Aldinga Beach, which has great lookouts, and long, flat beaches. Port Noarlunga is an historic port offering a underwater trail for snorklers and scuba divers. Here, there are loads of cafes and beautiful views.

You can also take the Onkaparinga River Wetlands Trail, home to birdlife, set in a recreation park. Alternatively, take the Echidna Trail or Nature Trail, which are bushwalks in the National Parks, giving you the opportunity to see various birds, reptiles and trees.
